When I watched a Western as a kid, I figured the good guy was always the gentle giant, or the soft spoken, serious sheriff, not the base loaded, hate belching bonehead. Yet now, as I have lost nearly all my innocence, I understand that we, meaning the U.S., is also always ready to release into our lives one of my horrible headline horde.

America has had Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson, Orville Faubus, Bull Connor, Joseph McCarthy, the Vietnam War, Nixon, Gov. Jim “Kent State” Rhodes, Watergate, Reagan, Iran-Contra, mass incarceration, Limbaugh, Stacey Koon (& LAPD 1991), W. Bush, forever war Afghanistan, Iraq, Trump, and the officer murderer of George Floyd. Each were supposed leaders, or events that have elements of the personifications that can be extracted from the B.B. headline horde.

There are obviously many others, and no party or side is completely immune from the full list. JFK planted the seed for Vietnam. And Democrats have not been pristine in their protection of Civil Rights, as in crime legislation.
