Systemic Racism is Societal Bullying.

A Former Doughy Lump Of A Bullied White Boy Explains.

.

White people have a hard time believing in the presence of systemic racism. Rationalizing that it is merely a few bad apples is much more comforting. If anything is systemically wrong, it is the Black culture. Such thoughts, comments, or theories, as in the previous sentence, are a common reaction when White society is threatened with accusations of imperfection. If something was wrong, our White ancestors should have taken care of it; so it cannot be our responsibility. Plus slavery and Jim Crow are only easy to determine as crimes against humanity in hindsight. Therefore, understanding and dealing with our flaws in realtime is unrealistic, and demanding we do such in this document is libelous. That means nothing we are doing now is wrong, until it is considered in the distant future.

.

Like White America in general, every bully is in denial, selectively or otherwise. Bullies stubbornly push forward with their dastardly plans even though potential discipline is just around the corner. Their hubris created from each conquest, escape from being caught, or teachers and administrators being clueless, all breed invincibility. Invincibility encourages taking more risks including the use of greater levels of force and control. When bullies are supported by the state, their power becomes absolute, which translates to abuse inflicted on certain groups, often the most vulnerable.

.

School bullies do not focus on, or confront the defensive line of the football, hockey, or rugby team. Instead outcasts, which are easily identified, are deemed their constituents of a sort. Bullies in wider American society target those peoples that Whites have deemed, at least in some ways, irredeemable.

.

Everyone knows who the bully’s targets will be. Bullies do not necessarily fall into the big and dumb stereotype bin. Most aggressive and likely bullies have a functional, or fully, sociopathic personality. They may actually need money for lunch, or just know that they can shake you down for cash, and use the lunch money excuse to semi-justify their need or desire to steal. Similar to justifying slavery because it was supposedly the only way to achieve prosperity back in the day. A functional sociopath, from my bullying history perspective, is the person who has been given these skills from their environment, likely due to negative experiences at home.

.

Most Americans will be inculcated to accept the bullying of others, go along to get along, and be compliant as in not intervening, standing on the sidelines. That can be 99.9% of the population, if only the most assertive interveners are subtracted. While any American may actually show up in these various categories, this concept and the percentages are focused on White Americans. (Review reference chart below.)

Maybe 3%–5% are inculcated to harbor bullying tendencies, sometimes forever unknown to their public selves, and their actions are more hidden after high school. Some will pursue these tendencies early, but outgrow many public elements as they mature. The occasional bully may only be a bully at work, versus bullying in a civic or political situation. The occasional, or selective, bully may just bully women, or immigrants, and not others.

The assisting bullies are about 10%-15% of the population; they are going to get involved in more mass oriented bullying activities. Bully assisters are the 5th to the 12th officers who were seen during the Rodney King kicking and beating, and may have participated, but were not the main assailants. One officer did partially intervene in the King beating, yet did not follow through. The two officers who helped hold down George Floyd for officer Chauvin were at least assisters. Someone whose job it is to protect and serve cannot be a civilian bystander, a.k.a. a go-along-to-get-along.

In a school situation a bully assister would be someone, who under minimal peer pressure, will join in on a school hazing, or target and pummel an outcast during dodge ball, possibly initiated by a functional bully student or gym teacher. Many ringleaders are functional sociopathic bullies; a fully sociopathic is harder to spot, less conspicuous in a school setting, more strategic than a standard bully, and more infrequent in the population.

NOTE: A person with controlling, sociopathic tendencies, may be more likely to join a police force.

The fully sociopathic are a very small fraction, probably much less than one in 10,000 will continue bullying activity in both public and personal ways, in varying degrees depending on circumstances, throughout their lives. They are either born with strong sociopathy tendencies, and-or have had a very stark, and terrible upbringing.

Interveners, and all other category participants are fluid, except the fully sociopathic, and category percentages, which are fairly static. People can intervene once, and never again, becoming a go-along-to-get along. Bully assisters can display functional attributes, and functional can move to the assister profile, although most do not move more than one level, up or down. Partial interveners can become go along to get alongs, or consistent interveners.

.

The fully sociopathic grows up to do things that should be crimes as in terrible spouses, and horrible bosses, and only sometimes gets arrested for his many white-collar crimes. They also are more likely to be the over-the-top skinheads, vigilantes, and fiery speakers against immigrants, and others they consider outcasts. The fully sociopathic can rile up the functional, socially constructed sociopaths. In future years the fully sociopath bully may recruit functional sociopaths, as a dictator might. This extreme level of sociopath is very nearly impossible to reform.

.

The functional sociopath in my bully hypothesis may not always exhibit their bully mentality, except in certain situations, only at work, only in politics, or only at home, for example. They can be very functional in the day to day sense, but their sociopathic activities are mostly beyond the pale. Yet, if their personal triggering factors would never appear, they can be your friendly neighbors, or you, yourself. It could be the company person who is promoted to senior VP before he has become bitter, so his sociopathic tendencies never inflame. He may only flame up when a person of color or a woman is promoted over him, or is made his boss. The remainder of the aggressive bully cohort will come from the bully assisters.

.

Go-along-to-get-alongs would be the drone bees for the more complex bully systems. A go-along-to-get-along is everyone who is not an intervener (at least currently), or when not in one of the three bully/sociopathic categories.

.

Similarly, reverse racism is a White bully system reaction. In no way would average Black American students get the kind of Supreme Court results average students like Bakke and Fisher got. Take an inch from White power, and it will take back more than it ever gave. Such a reverse power play is only possible through a bully system. You cannot anger the White bully.

.

How Bullying Plays Outside And Inside.

White Americans may think it is harsh to consider so many people problematically caught within the bullying ranks. From what I remember of the book by Hanna Arendt, The Banality of Evil, it is the tendency of people in general to go along to get along. This is White society’s most insidiously problematical group; an ingrained initiative to take action in a bullying situation is greatly underdeveloped. We are bystander inertia, allowing hate and systemic racism to move forward by the sheer mass of our sizable inaction. That is made possible by our lack of other awareness, or caring, a susceptibility to confrontation avoidance, or peer pressure, or a wealth of indifference. Harboring one of those characteristics, or some of all of them, makes possible ongoing bullying, whether as a student standing by when another is attacked, or a citizen who allows skin-color discrimination to occur, and continue. A good Christian would call this kind of inaction to bullying, a sin of omission.

.

Most people may believe they would be the German, Polish citizen, etc. that tried to stop the Jewish Holocaust. Yet most of our American ancestors allowed slavery, Jim Crow, and the destruction of Indigenous peoples, to continue for decades or centuries. Whatever or whoever was normalized downward could, and often did, become vulnerable to destruction. Whoever was looked down upon or ignored, could be, and often was, devastated in some partial, or near complete fashion.

.

We are not always sheep, but when our way of life is threatened, or perceived to be threatened, we can allow horrible things to happen, either explicitly, or as collateral, “Oh, we just couldn’t help it” damage. For example: (1) We allow the torture of supposed Muslim terrorists, but do not torture a confession out of White police officers to determine why they killed an unarmed Black American. (2) We drone kill Muslim Americans, but no White supremacist terrorists were droned to death. (3) Japanese Americans are put in concentration camps, but Italian and German Americans are not corralled and put in cages like wild zoo animals. There is a pattern in those three examples; all were determined irredeemable (enemy) others, by a White supremacist government, and people, before the events that precipitated their negative sentences. Why do Americans of European, White ancestry get the benefit of the doubt, but those who are not, do not get that benefit? And Whites are not the enemy of logical constructs, ethical consistency, and cultural fairness? Huh.

.

The school bully scenario plays out the same way. Anyone considered an outcast is also irredeemable to the average student. Some students outgrow the outcast category sooner than later, but realized that from grade school to senior high is two or three lifetimes for the bullied. Every once in a while someone stands up for them, but these mature students are few and far between. The intervener may act only in certain, more comfortable instances, not every time they should. There are many fewer Anne Frank type saviors, where protection from the bully is consistent.

.

Bullying at school is like systemic racism in another way. Bullies are not ever-present, physically. Merely being unseen or unheard does not remove all the power they have over outcast students. Some times I would have a class in junior high or 9th grade, where there was no bully in my classroom. Maybe only in four or five of my seven classes did one or more of my bullying nemeses plant themselves. They were often more ferocious in packs of two or three, sometimes nearly docile if only one of them. This switching-off and on dynamic makes it tougher for schools and society to determine who the bullies are.

.

Other times I only felt more constrained by the bully’s presence when more were packed into one class. The fear of pain or confrontation, ebbed and flowed, depending on their proximity, and the context, for example how much power each classroom teacher actually had. Similar to how each state confronts and clamps down on bullying of any type, or does not, e.g. voter suppression or downgrading LGBTQ rights.

.

The anxious feelings alone had me plan my school days in advance to avoid as much taunting, abuse, and mental disruption as possible. My schoolwork almost always came in a suffering second place due to that anxiety. I feared what was going to happen when we were released back into the hallways. Going to the bathroom in between classes was almost always bad news, gym class was the worst, then lunch, and right after school.

.

These daily and hourly micro-aggressions twisted my self esteem, and ability to learn in knots. Such daily, hourly, minute by minute, second by second, internal and external forces can drain the spirit and destroy your future. Imagine if the entire society was bullying you in a similar but never ending way… Black Americans are never able to fully escape, or detach, from the effects of systemic racism. This longer reach negates the one or two bad apples’ myth.

.

Depending on where and when you lived in the southern or northern U.S., Black Americans or other people of color, found their situation worse, a little better, unbearable, and only sometimes nearly as good as it could be. The experiences for many have tended toward better in the last half century, but results in the removal of racist bullying in many areas has been meager, and faltering. Like after high school, bullies do not disappear, and bullying does not evaporate, the groundwork is laid, and nearly undisturbed, so White Americans can continue our go-along-to-get-along racist system, and other forms of bullying into the future.

.

The Intervener Personality and Purpose.

Does every bully-boss get shutdown immediately? Sure, the two most intelligent, and-or physically strongest employees in the company will immediately give him/her bully boss the boot! Nope, untrue. They almost always go along to get along. The rarely a bully or sexual harasser boss, or moderately sexual harassing or bullying boss is even less likely to get shutdown. Why? The power dynamic can increase exponentially when the boss gathers up an obliging, protective buffer. Some employees know what is going on. Many of the abused will have told others, especially if the abuses are ongoing. Yet the best employees are often no better at interfering to protect the abuse at their work, or being a whistleblower for any reason, than they were as students against bullies, before their adult careers began. The bully can make weaker potential interveners believe the stories of the abused individuals are exaggerated, or based on concepts that make the bully seem like the victim, or that it is nothing but a she said, he said quandary.

.

Interveners are a small subset of the best employees, otherwise the best employees would be some of the worst employees. Because interveners are often not those who tend toward the corporate climber, more likely interveners are idealists. Exposing a boss’ nefarious faults or felonious actions, let alone an entire corporation, beyond a whimper or two, is usually devastating to a person’s career. The monstrous or explosive sociopath often will get his comeuppance without necessarily requiring an internal intervener, however, the more strategic or calmly monstrous sociopath can build a stronger intimidation structure by coddling supporters and sycophants, and-or threatening their job status, to ward off internal interveners. When a bully has their obliging, protective circle or buffer, it is difficult for one intervener to ever make a dent in the sociopath’s power structure. That is another reason why whistleblowers are hardly ever successful at spreading awareness of the diseased parts of the company, let alone producing satisfactory and lasting changes that root out disease in the organization.

.

Clearly the above company bully problem is analogous to systemic racism, merely add a much more extensive matrix of structures with centuries of overlaid elements. Every few decades or so, the system may be whitewashed after anger boils over, but hardly ever is the system completely stripped of its damaging prejudices, or rebuilt altogether. Bullies do not like others seeing what or where the problems really are; such an inspection will expose their abuses. Long-term myths have been created, and short-term, updated lies are deployed, to whitewash bad parts. The whitewashing, or the level of White supremacist myth acceptance, muddles the reason for intervening. The lack of committed interveners, and-or the drop off in intervening consistency, especially by White Americans, provides the bullies with the wherewithal, and time to re-emerge with much of the old abusive system intact.

.

The outcast category in a work environment is different than in school; it is the person with less power including the recently hired, the oldest hires, females, LGBTQ, non-Christians, and all people of color. Most workers are go-along-to-get-alongs because intervening can mean losing out on status, raises, or promotions, and experiencing harassment when there was none (or increased), reduced physical safety, and job loss.

.

For example, my father, RJC stood up to corporate structure bullies at various times. His final verbal scuffle was with a plant manager at one of the corporation’s many manufacturing locations. As the new quality control manager, RJC would not be signing-off on anything sketchy. The plant manager had previously been involved in various unscrupulous activities, when RJC worked with him a decade or two before. Shortly after their biggest confrontation, the plant manager was named CEO of the entire Bendix corporation. Within a year of the new CEO’s installment, dad was laid off.

.

People intrinsically understand how damaging stepping out of line can be. Taking such a risk is not the same as failing at something, and learning from it. The bully may not go into bullying knowing this, but they quickly recognize if they are good at choosing the outcast, continued success is likely. That is why positive attitudes about how things have changed for the better fall flat with those who are still abused by the system. The greater public is only regularly told about the good changes by the dominant society, whereas the bad things are more hidden, and only the less powerful abused bring them up.

.

The abused also recognize how easy it is for others to get away with abusing them in certain situations. Members of the dominant society are less likely to recognize these abuse situations, or recognize them as bad, since they would have been ignoring them, or have been indifferent to them.

.

The success of our programs to eradicate racially systemic problems have always been, and must be, exaggerated by White Americans. That is due to our implication in the system of racism, and our continual, ingrained propensity to inaction. We are loathe to admit any lack of exceptionalism. But most every White American still goes along to get along. As human nature usually predicts, those causing the problems will want to extricate themselves as quickly as possible, whether they are sincere or not about their complicity, or likelihood of following through with appropriate changes. Even when we have done bad, we want to be seen as doing good. The good people, who we perceive as most of us, want to feel better faster too, because we deserve it!

.

That said, few White Americans actually intervene for change; meaning we let a few of those do-gooder Whites do it for us, then the remainder of us pile on to accept the airy accolades of that change. Yet, if only a small portion of White Americans are truly intervening, the change can, and will, only be minimal, which it has been up to this point. We put a cup of water or two in a jug, fill the rest with air, cap, and seal it, and call that a gallon of success! This gallon does not last long in a desert of lies and myths.

.

Exceptionalism Myth Making: Since we White Americans are exceptional, the problems could never have been that bad in the first place. Therefore, only a tiny percent of the narrative must be tweaked and twisted to get our fairytale perfect.

I mean, we ended slavery, didn’t we? Yes, we started Jim Crow, and redlining after slavery. But we ended Jim Crow, didn’t we? Yes, we started the drug war and mass incarceration after ending “some” parts of Jim Crow and redlining. But that means we are doing less and less bad in a racist shit show, slow-mo, lives-destroying incremental manner. And remember, overall White people are good people.

If Black Americans graciously cut us another break, we Whites will feel good enough to employ something a bit less onerous than mass incarceration and the drug war in our next round of concessions. Now what White American doesn’t think that will be a huge improvement, and will balloon with more hubris than ever before?!

.

The White Bully’s Irredeemable Label Disease.

Unfortunately for individual Black Americans, the irredeemable label is rarely removed completely, and only partially by the remainder of society. Even people of color are trapped in the White supremacist enforced, sliding-scale of skin-color valuation within communities of color. The lighter the shade of a person’s skin, the more value that person is given, a.k.a. colorism, occurs in communities of color as well. While colorism can damage relationships in the Black community, in Whiter society structural colorism, in its systemic racism form, destroys Black lives, and entire Black communities.

.

While some may take colorism within Black culture as a way to exonerate Whites for the prejudice they bring to the table, White Americans are still left with the main and worst form of the bully label in this power dynamic. Additionally, Blacks would have no reason for colorism without White supremacy (or lighter-the-skin-color-the-better supremacy). Whites also allow the bullies that include our resistant-to-change government and social structures to constrain the great mass of the dominant White culture, in the go-along-to-get-along sheep category.

.

Of course, the bullied deserve their fate because they do not, or cannot fight back, survival of the fittest and all. Merely by pulling up their own bootstraps, Black Americans would do just fine.

The travesties of logic, directly above, destroy the lives of many Americans of all colors.

.

Stephen Hawking five years ago, and my sister today, who has cerebral palsy, are irredeemable outcasts as well, right? No, such a group of irredeemables, or outcasts, as they would have been considered one hundred years ago, will be given a pass now, and we will make sure no one bullies them. However, every other person, or group that cannot make it in our system, is a eugenic’s case study in failure, and they deserve what they get from a dominant, bully society that relies on everyone to be good, and hardworking… sheep. Keep your head down, and do as the bully system says.

.

The Nazis were great cultivators of bullies, and superior herders of the go-along-to-get-alongs. They knew there was a ready made group of bully followers, the simply ignorant, and many more with a detached indifference. As do all cultures that struggle to respect a diversity of cultures, a great majority of other German’s had a slack-jawed acceptance to the Nazi’s inhumane perspective, or were suspicious of their irredeemable outcasts, which included the Jews. However, the humans in this sheep herd, which was most Germans, were not necessarily stupid or uneducated. They just wanted to live their lives, and would avoid intervening in something that may hurt them, or their family. Which inspires the axiom: It is better to save your family, and your own ass, than save your soul.

.

Even though afterwards, many may be sorry or ashamed, they did not do anything when it counted. Of course, millions of those same Germans killed, or allowed their family members to die, for Hitler’s insane ideology. This shows how humans are able to hold two or more opposing functions in their code of ethics. Savagely killing, ignoring, avoiding, discriminating, denigrating, or hating others, you or your society have deemed irredeemable, allows you to be a good, and terrible person simultaneously.

.

If we can forgive the founders for being enslavers, because it was their culture, or it should also be possible to forgive Hitler because it is just what a German (Aryan) society did back in the day, then we can forgive ourselves daily for being racists, LGBTQ haters, sexists, or antisemites, right?

That is why we allow White supremacists to leave up statues and raise flags to celebrate slavers and traitors.

In that way, good Christians can willfully support voter suppression.

Finally, people with whitewashed consciences can hate Jews, the Irish, Muslims, papists, Chinese, all Asians, immigrants of many kinds, and still be good. Huh?

.

There is no perfect solution to these systemic problems. However, not recognizing the problems makes it nearly impossible to develop better solutions. Bullying in school or at work, and systemic racism and genderism are not exactly the same, but there is a logic connecting all of them. Women know who are the sexual harassers harassing them. Bullied students know who their bullies are. Black Americans and other people of color know who most of the racists are, and what many of the racist policies are. Trusting their judgement is paramount. Yet because of the encrusted structure of racism, in other cases it is more difficult for anyone to tell where, what, and who the problems are.

.

Those on the inside fighting for ending harassment of all kinds, and for more recognition, higher wages, etc. have only so much power over a bully system. Expecting Black Americans to overcome such a system is like in every school expecting all the freaks and geeks to battle all the bullies, and win forever. A significant disruption of some status quo element(s) is required, which cannot be consistently and successfully instigated by the oppressed, if the status quo of a dominant culture continues being indifferent to human degradation, and is change lethargic. That is the dominant culture in the case of racism, and other majorities, as to America’s many prejudicial structures.

.

For school students in general, they may not want to tell adults who the bullies are, for fear of embarrassment, retribution, or merely more ridicule. Black students are constrained more comprehensively by bullying administrators, and entire school systems, due to school disciplining structures that create the all-too-common school to prison pipeline.

.

Therefore, we need to know the logic of this overall bullying abuse to better understand where, what, and who it comes from. Statistics are the best barometer. That said, many people abuse statistics to thwart attempts to override the power of the bully class. (Read Condemnation of Blackness by Khalil G. Muhammad, for deep background on pathology conjuring via statistics.) Most Americans do not set out in life to support bullies. Yet most of us are also not built up psychologically to rock the boat. Obviously, if rocking the boat was an inherently-activated trait we all had, and employed it all the time, there are few things that would get done except for the tipping of every boat. Of course, White Americans are woefully short of such an outcome, often afraid to float any new societal boat, let alone tip over an old, bad one.

.

Why My Boat Got Tipped Onto The Rocks.

This is where a more in depth look at my personal story is required. As I noted above, I have been bullied. It happened more frequently in school, and a few times in various paid work as an adult. I remember only one time where I fought back physically; it occurred in school. Although it was very hard for me to keep my mouth shut when I was bullied. Possibly one reason, I became a bully magnet. “You hit like my sister,” was a common refrain of mine. That may sound sexist now, but I had four sisters, and they all hit pretty damn hard. So it was a true statement, unfortunately, it usually was misinterpreted by the sexist bullies thrashing me. I was a doughy, short statured person, early on. Until I was about 12, doctors thought I would never reach five feet in height, even though my father was almost six feet tall.

.

I was never able to bulk up very much at all until after high school. Climbing that damn rope in gym class was tough. Chin ups were also an ordeal, I could hang there almost five seconds, though there was no presidential fitness award for that. But pulling up to my chin? Nope. The P.E. teacher always used me as a cautionary tale for someone you didn’t want to be. Of course, killer dodge ball bruised more than my ego. Also one sadistic gym coach had us play G.A. soccer. It stood for Get Aggressive, and translated to: Remember this, you sociopathic bullies, putting Chwalek through hell is more important than scoring a goal, gym class, your personal goals, and life itself.

.

I made fun of all my travails at the time, but there were days, weeks, and months when the internal humor was drained from me. Walking in the fog of horrific self esteem dismemberment took me to places I luckily have forgotten, at least from an accidental remembrance standpoint. In a project like this essay, I can call up a number of those old compartmentalized memories, if need be. We compartmentalize our acceptance of hate, racism, and bullying in the same way. Of course, one form of compartmentalization is harmful to potentially millions of others, and the other is protective of oneself. To fully free millions, we must extract societal forms of compartmentalized horrors to break down systematized racism.

.

My Outcast And Irredeemable Attributes.

I had a number of non-outcast attributes. My grades were almost always passable, and could have mostly been A’s and B’s if I was in the trying mode, or mood. I was also a great looking kid (if you first subtract the best looking ten or 50% of our class). On the other hand, I was clumsy, nonathletic, especially until late high school, and had untreated ADHD. My ADHD played out in a myriad of ways, getting me in trouble, with school authorities due to my class clowning, stubborness, avoidance of bullies, etc. The effects of ADHD came in waves of euphoria, and drilled-down depression. It created deep anxieties I still experience, even with ongoing treatment. (Read an essay I wrote that references in more detail my ADHD life sentence.)

.

That being said, the bullying I received in junior high came from my outcast status that had more to do with the new kid syndrome, which also gave me a perspective many other bullied kids would not have back then. Although families are more mobile today. New students arriving mid-year, and-or after the first few years of school, hardly ever have the bully-protection, support potential a kindergartner can develop. Even a child from a well-off new family cannot create the same influence connections quick enough to fend off bullying, especially in the first few years. Yet, they do have a better chance of growing out of outcast status in general. Of course, the well-off concept is relative, depending on socio-economic demographics of the school system.

.

Conversely, someone who starts out in the same community as an outcast is not likely to ever get un-outcasted there. When we lived in South Bend, I was just another Polish kid (Irish on my mom’s side), and I had many Polish and some Black friends, but my life situation was not very unique, except my father had a higher status job than most.

.

My ADHD did not stand out too much throughout grade school, mostly because my parents had me wait until I was six to attend kindergarten, and because people generally thought hyperactivity was more common in grade school kids. So my ADHD was a nil factor in my grade school popularity, or lack thereof. However, all my innate, non-popular traits would play out more perniciously punchy in the next turn of my life.

.

The Next Turn, Or Westward Young Man…

Then my father lost his job. We were within a few weeks of being homeless, when he got hired to work at a plant in Centerville, Iowa, 14 miles from Missouri, near the middle of the state. The small town was 98.5% White, two or fewer Black students per grade. We arrived in the middle of my 6th grade year. We lived in a somewhat rundown old house, and we never had a new car after our move. Being the new kid, wearing clothes on the cheaper side, no friends of many years to protect me, and with all my savoir faire noted above, I was destined to be an outcast.

.

If you are not immediately determined an outcast on your first day of kindergarten, or before, the earliest grades from a student-to-student perspective, don’t so much build self esteem as protect it from harm. Self-esteem growth comes more into play as puberty begins to craft your adult persona. Parents are the self-esteem engines before puberty. There are outliers and overachievers who do, or seem to transcend socialized positioning, but most of us our trapped, categorized, or delegitimized via socialization into our future positions in life to some, or a large, extent.

.

None of this socialization is fully unbreakable. Though breaking the cycle does not just happen, and often requires painstaking creative effort. The average Black person has never had the same chances the average White person has, and the same for other genders, and people of color. The top ten percent, give or take a few percent, do not make it unscathed, but their future is much more sky’s the limit when compared to those below them in life’s lottery, who are left to compete in a much more brutal system, and struggle.

.

Black Americans who broke free from the educational and financial independence restrictions of the White supremacist, socialization cycle in the 19th century were considered exceptional negroes. Today, breaking through business and education ceilings are whitewashed by the exaggerated and dismissive views of White society toward affirmative action for Blacks, and other racist suspicions. Additionally, the egregious case of White affirmative action is never considered in the racist critiques of Black affirmative action. Almost any advantage gained by Blacks is denigrated, even a Black POTUS cannot escape such base, and racist, assaults on reason. That said, what is harmed most by this systemic structure of suspicion, and long-term societal undermining, are Black Americans not in the top 10%, who do not have the luck of circumstance origin, as do White Americans with the same potential.

.

Since we know the go-along-to-get-along aspect of allowing the bullies to do their work is ingrained in us at least a bit in most every area, and in other areas it is strong, socialization by the human culture, and our peer groups is likely important to how we mature, or don’t in many or some cases. Saving ourselves is the strongest drive in human nature. Intuitively, a large portion of humanity is intrinsically predisposed to focus on saving selective others including family members, or close friends; and-or trained to save specific others as part of their job. Counterintuitively, those same trained heroes or hero tendencies turn very reluctant, even recalcitrant, when it comes to saving others we do not know well-enough, or feel uncomfortable around due to their skin-color, etc.

.

General parameters for bully and non-bully intervening: A parent is more likely to run unthinkingly into a burning building for our pre-teen child, than for our healthy, and ambulatory 33 year-old offspring. There is an overriding reason for it, e.g. the younger child is much less independent. An on-duty firefighter will generally run into a burning building for most anyone, if their training approves of the action, but likely wouldn't if their training demanded they should not.

That said, neither the firefighter, police officer, or soldier, or parents, no matter how heroic they are for their kids, or how well trained they are in their job, they may never be an intervener in another part of their lives. Societal intervening is a different skill set because we have been inculcated to think that being a bystander is hardly ever a bad thing. When someone’s skin color determines our level of empathy, something ugly is happening in our brains.

.

Unfortunately, there are notorious situations where police have not administered first aid, often it seems due to skin-color of the victim.

.

If you drive passed a person being pistol whipped by a cop, do you stop to help, report, or video them, OR do you think it is just what cops need to do sometimes? If it is your friend or neighbor; if they are Black or White? Many times there are supposedly no hard and fast rules, such as feeling threatened by a hoodie and Skittles is reason enough to kill a teenager, or for an alleged minor crime you can decide to be judge, jury, and choker of human beings for 10 minutes until death. If no one would ever know what you did not do to stop a possible bad thing due to your willful ignorance of racism, are you guilty of something? Do you owe society something? Our racist bullies not caught on video, not bullies?

.

When I Fought Back, Kinda.

In 7th grade, which would be a full year of bullying hell, I was standing in line with the afternoon class, about six classrooms. Teddy, the 12-year-old bully with the muscle definition of a 20-something, and White supremacist wannabe, made his way down the line toward the bus. We had such a big class they had to bus half the 7th grade, in morning and afternoon shifts, to the new elementary school, where there were many unused classrooms.

.

Anyway, Teddy, after our school lunch each day, pounded on his outcast constituency as he walked by to cut in line near the front. I do not remember anyone previously stopping him, or telling him to stop. Some would say I winced every time he came by. However, each time I saw myself grabbing him by his neck, and snapping that straggly-blonde mopped head, off his shoulders, and plunging it on a pike, and marching with head on pike victoriously through the school. Yelling, all school bullying ends everywhere, now, and forever! Yet day after day, Teddy had done this for over a hundred days, as I only daydreamed his annihilation.

.

Then one day, a month before summer break, right behind me was a kid who was an outcast’s outcast of a nerd. He was totally oblivious to the world around him. I was almost jealous. Though I knew his pocket protector and slide rule were not going to protect him from The Unbearable Teddy.

.

So with the timing and skill of a Polish ninja assassin, as Teddy was about to pound on my pocket-protector line mate, I leapt at him, and before I could find a pike, we were flopping on the floor. My crucial mistake was looking for the pike before his headless shoulders were squirting blood all over the hallway. In a few seconds, it was over, after the principal and vice principal snagged us from the floor. Even though I was suspended for the day, I was victorious since I considered a draw my win, and not his. Of course, I could have won outright, if I wanted to. Except as I was looking for the pike, I swore off my bloodlust. Lucky for you, Teddy!

.

By the end of ninth grade, I grew to be six foot two, which put me in the tallest few percent of males in my grade. Then I was first to get a driver’s license, and have a car, though a junker. So my car and height made me both very popular and somewhat intimidating, although not intimidatingly popular to where I was never bullied again. The once in awhile future bullying I experienced was due to my big mouth, or my quick-witted big mouth in previous encounters with the bully, or at the time of that future bullying.

.

The Bully That is Crime, And White Supremacy.

Crime is a bully. As an apartment building caretaker, a block from the corner of West Lake and Grand, in late 1980s Minneapolis, within 9 months after starting, I dealt with three incidents, each one worse than the previous. I escorted a belligerent drunk from the building, who once outside, threw an unopened bottle of beer through the bathroom window of a renter. Both window and bottle shattered right in front of her, as she sat on the toilet. Of course, since it was a White guy, throwing the bottle and a Black woman nearly bludgeoned in her own home, the police took as much interest in it as you would expect. Like it was a glass recycling issue.

.

The second crime occurred a few months later, one floor up and to the north of mine. Someone visiting that apartment had left a car running in the middle of the parking lot, with a five year-old, expired, temporary license stuck to the back window. I figured it was stolen, so I called 9-1-1. Three police cars showed up, determined what rental the car was related to, and I was asked by one officer to open the renter’s door. When he said, now step back, the three officers behind me lifted guns from their holsters. I excused myself, and ran screaming from the building! Not really.

.

The third occurrence began when three young men were bringing in what looked like three stereo speakers. It may not have been suspicious except that it was one AM on an early Sunday morning, they told me they were moving in, they wore the exact same uniform, Nike or Adidas shoes and sweats, I did not know them, they personally had not rented an apartment, and the true renter, whose apartment was directly adjacent to mine, was not home. Of course, the most important caveat is that each speaker had a centered and numbered dial, such speakers are usually called safes. The day after the police arrested these three men, who threatened me as they were escorted out in cuffs, I was told the alleged criminals were a Chicago affiliated gang that was selling cocaine.

.

I intervened in those incidents, because by age 25 I had decided I would no longer be bullied anymore, or let others be. However, such activity is not easy to pursue. Many or most Whites would have merely ignored these criminal activities, pretended to be absent, left as these incidents were occurring, or never worked there in the first place. While I felt pride in my actions, I did not intervene in bullying of all kinds.

.

My employer and landlord had made a number of racist statements about his renters, and I never called him out on it, nor turned him in for the petty scams he did to receive Section 8 government vouchers. I realized my anti-bullying campaign was only used against those I had power over, and not used against the person who had power over my job. Though I did not report him, after that initial scam cover up, which involved moving newer fixtures to temporarily replace older ones in a Section 8 rental, I refused to participate in his other scams. All said, and done, I was just another pawn of systemic racism, and a White supremacist assister.

.

Bullying That is Rumor And Myth.

Another time I realized a nice white person had bullied Black Americans just like I had, without recognizing how much of a bully he was being, occurred when an in-law of mine, a number of years my senior, told me in 1995 about a personal experience in the 1970s. He said four Black men were hired at the multinational corporation he worked for. Supposedly, a short time after they started, the Black men were let go, or quit. Never did my in-law work directly with them, merely he related the story that seemed mostly a rumor. That the Black men were merely affirmative action hires, and did not want to work very hard. Since my in-law told me the story without any prompting, he had likely told family members, his close relatives, and buddies.

.

Spreading those rumors equals dominant cultural bullying. In Minnesota Black Americans make up less than 7% today, and probably less than 3% in the 1970s. When the great portion of workers in a company are White men, and bad news travels wider and faster than good news, such rumors become very harmful. Yet these rumors are conveniently seen or dismissed as harmless by Whites who blame Black Americans for all their problems, not systemic racism. Are there some instances where these rumors are partially true? Sure, but when the good things occur, who repeats them? Negative reviews greatly outweigh positive reviews, the same with spreading of racist rumors and lies.

.

These White lies and myths are spread like truth to the susceptible and gullible, making real the self fulfilling prophecy of systemic racism. Spreading rumors like this is the grease that constantly lubricates the system that is constructed by the dominant White society and government.

.

In my early twenties, I worked at a very small company in Minneapolis. It was owned for over three decades by Mr. Breland, a Black American. He taught me how to pristinely refinish wooden portions of antique furniture. Mr. Breland worked eight to nine hours a day, sometimes six days a week. He hired White and Black workers. I even brought my wife to meet him almost a decade later. He was a great guy.

.

Now ask yourself, from those two stories alone, are Black Americans good workers? Also ask yourself, how many White Americans have enough, day-in and day-out experiences with Black Americans to know whether they are good workers or not? Finally, how many White Americans haven’t had regular interactions with workers of any other color, but think, say, or believe they know how well people of color work? The Whites who are mistaken must be quite substantial, when very few actually have had any direct experience being around people of color, let alone enough experience to make such claims. Yet somehow Whites have many negative thoughts about Black Americans in many areas of life.

.

No Experience Yet Somehow Massive Knowledge.

Black Americans make up less than 15% of the United States population, or not quite 3 out of every 20 Americans. Of that 48 million, over 56% live in the southeast, and 17% in the midwest, and northeast, and 10% in the west. Therefore, a high percentage of Whites come in contact with no more than a few Black Americans during their lives, and mostly intermittently, except some portion of Southerners. Then how do White Americans come up with their racism?

.

Our White supremacist culture created and perpetuates these racist myths, and the myths become truth by repetition in many forms, and nearly impenetrable ignorance generated, by unfamiliarity with the group being denigrated. After so many generations, it is hard to determine what came first, the chicken or the egg, a.k.a. the mythic ideas spawned by enslavers and slavery, or the racist structures and systems that hold racism in place, and harm lives, even when diversity and familiarity is more pronounced.

.

Why do school bullies often know who can be bullied? They want to be correct, so they are not pummeled by the powerful friends, or family of an outcast. They take note of who their friends are, and what connections they have to others in the school. The son or daughter of the vice principal is unlikely to be bullied, if at all, in the same way a kid without any connections would be. Black American adults are bullied in a similar way, and for more obvious reasons. Their skin-color is an easy positioning, and profiling, device for Whites, but it is also done by noting where they live, work, or hang out.

.

For example, where would police be able to stop a high percentage of Black Americans when they are not able to see skin color at night? Mostly Black American communities. How could a corporation mostly avoid interviewing Black American job applicants without seeing their skin-color? Because the applicants résumé showed they lived in an area populated by people of color, and-or due to their first or last name, and possibly from their phone number. This tactic is also abused with home loan applications.

.

Should bullies have that much power to determine your future? If your group is more often targeted by bullies, should you expect to be more or less better off on average than those who are not bullied?

.

Our culturally taught impressions become reality in our seeing eyes. Having been taught something negative about a certain group of people will cause you to only see those attributes, often misinterpreting their meaning, or seeing what you want to see. It also can happen with an individual. For example, our oldest daughter did very well in choral music. In our generally small community, she stood out at an early age, grade school into high school. She got to do some solo performances in school, and a couple other venues, and was solely nominated a number of years to represent the school in regional choral events.

.

She ended up liking musicals more than solo, or choral singing because acting and belting out tunes behind makeup, and costume, was more her style. Rather than making her more popular the early singing caused various rifts in her ability to create relationships. Likely her shyness and nervousness when singing, alone in front of everyone, made her seem stuck up. I figured what also happened was that the only time students remembered something about her, was when it looked or seemed like she was being stuck up. “Go ahead, watch her closely like I have been, and you will notice how stuck up she is. Here are some things to very closely watch for… See that, I told you she was stuck up.”

.

Similarly, a Black American under the guise of our myth-infested, White-cultured gaze cannot overcome our fixated, ahistorical perceptions. See a person of color’s face on TV or online, and Whites only see what verifies our prejudiced notions, as my in-law above had given credence to for many racism receptive White people in the 1970s. Or ten good things are presented, and just one bad thing, or something that connotes bad to Whites, is shown, and our “Black Americans are bad” beliefs are validated. Having very few day-to-day, in-person experiences with Black Americans, guarantees that Whites will not overcome our inculcated ignorance, and prejudice for two or three generations minimum, without complete whitewash removal, and a comprehensive, realtime societal update.

.

A common complaint from White Americans about Black Americans are how loud they can be, especially when laughing. Whether this unverified myth is true or not, which is worse laughing loudly, or a power hungry bully society that wants the bullied group to be nice, and quiet, fake-good people like them? Choose your Exceptional Americans: supposedly loud Black people, or actual power hungry White louts?

.

The 400 years of layering lies and myths has made it easier for Whites to ignore the deeper problems that implicate our ancestor’s past, and our current, participation. Because we believe these myths so readily, we bury our complicity under the falsehood encrustment as to racial disparities, police brutality, segregation, joblessness, over-policing, crime in urban areas, mass incarceration, etc. This myth and lies encrustation dulls our inquisitiveness into gross societal injustices, and engenders a lack of interest in destroying the façade, our go-along-to-get-along ancestors raised up all around us. Our whitewashed, artificial Christian flavoring, exceptionalism façade, covers up in varying degrees, our insidious White supremacist government, and racist social structures.

.

A Juxtaposition Of Systemic Racism In Microcosm.

I was also bullied earlier, when I was in grade school. But it was a different context. Rather than an outcast problem, I consider it an in-cast problem. After the new housing project was completed across from our elementary school in South Bend, around 1970, the classes went from 99.5% White to about 80% White, and 20% Black. My father, the stellar intervener, had been instrumental in fashioning basic parameters of the housing project by engaging with the city council, over the initial objections of the mostly White community. He got involved when a White supremacist showed up to our home with a petition that was hate filled. RJC took the petition, and pointedly encouraged the outside agitator, petitioner to leave the neighborhood because she wouldn’t be presenting it to anyone else. Dad knew from his experience during WWII what kind of unrest such a hateful campaign could incite.

.

My friend Harrison was the only Black student in our class until our 4th grade year. We had been best friends since 1st grade. My parents got to be good friends with his parents the day my father brought his revised petition and housing idea to Harrison’s father. At least a few of our neighbors worried out loud as to RJC’s safety in visiting by himself a Black man about a housing project for Black Americans. His three plus hour visit scared them even more. Somehow his meeting with Harrison’s dad was scarier to his neighbors than WWII was for my dad.

.

Harrison’s parents were also interveners, having moved into a three block housing development as the only people of color in the mid 1960s. His parents pushed passed White society limits in other ways, too. So their intervener status is much ballyhooed by the pull yourself up by the bootstraps’ and uplift-suasion groups.

.

However, if White interveners, with 60–80% of the population during the last half century, cannot overcome systemic racism, it is unlikely Black interveners with under 15% of the population can. While these flares of intervening uplift are individually possible for Black Americans, the bully enforced White society does not allow it to occur for average Black Americans as it frictionlessly has done, and still does, for average White Americans.

.

Even the best intentioned decisions by parental interveners will play out in the lives of their children in both positive and negative ways, a.k.a. learning life’s lessons, as they did for Harrison and me. If the anti-housing project, racist petitioners had been successful, nothing would have changed for awhile at least. Harrison would have continued as the only Black student in my class, until we attended junior high. Instead, our friendship would move into another stage in 4th grade where both of us were in-cast, at least partially, into the Black community. Ironically, neither of us would be welcome, as from my limited viewpoint at the time.

.

I understood racism more than most White kids in those years because of my parents’ integration organizing, and my relationship with Harrison and his family, but nothing deeply enough to connect up all that was occurring or why. Overtime I have thought a lot about it, and read enough, to where I am much closer to understanding why the relationship with the Black community occurred as it did for us grade schoolers at the time. One example that correlates with my experience is in Beverly Daniel Tatum’s book, and its title, Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? While my perspective now may be influenced by her book, and others, I will try to relate my personal experience, and analysis of it in my own words.

.

When Harrison and I first walked into the cafeteria in 4th grade, the new class of Black students were all sitting together. This would not be unusual, even if racism was not a factor, if you consider almost no one had the chance to get to know the other at that point. Though candidly, I cannot remember if it stayed segregated for the 2 and a half years I remained there, and our move to Iowa. That is weird since in 6th grade, I helped dish out food at lunch as I faced the diners. Servers got to eat some of the extra food; a big reason I got so doughy before we relocated to Centerville.

.

As Harrison and I got part way to the food line in 4th grade, we heard many of the Black students chant directly at us, “it is Uncle Tom, and his White honky”. This chanting likely did not occur again after that one day. What did last longer was face-to-face bullying. It centered around two students: Poppy and Armond. Their reverse proportional stature made them the Laurel and Hardy, or The Game and Lil Wayne of bullies. Armond was the big, solidly built guy, probably six inches taller than Harrison and me, seemed like a foot. Poppy was the skinny rail of a kid, two-thirds our weight, and maybe a bit shorter too. Poppy was street smart, and Armond was quiet, contemplative, maybe bookish, and only there because Poppy was his best buddy from forever.

.

For the next two years or so we were regularly confronted by the two students, and roughed up. They did not like us hanging out together. Since they had been segregated from the day they were born, and their parents, or influential others, made a wariness of Whites known to them, for good reason, it would take them awhile to understand our relationship. I was the enemy, and Harrison was a sell out, a.k.a. Uncle Tom, so neither of us could be trusted, etc. Maybe Harrison would have been a Clarence Thomas, or Tim Scott if our elementary school had not been integrated. Perhaps, I could have become a strict states’ rights a libertarian, and been a bootstrap boosterism bloviator.

.

Either way, that microcosm of an experience, and bullying juxtaposition, gave me insight I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Everyone wants to figure out their world. No one likes being oppressed. Many oppressors oppress because they were oppressed. The vicious cycle continues if no one, unbiasedly as possible, looks at, and directly deals with the underlying causes. However, the layers of bias are terribly stubborn with our centuries of societal canard corruption.

.

Before I get to my serious racism analogy, or juxtaposed microcosm, you can learn how the Poppy and Armond bullying story ended, which happened shortly before 5th grade finished. By the way, Harrison, Poppy, and Armond are pseudonyms. This section depicts how, even when bad things happen in life, a good laugh, or an awkwardly funny situation, can break the ice, and create a flow to better connections with people who are not communicating their life problems effectively. And not always the better connections we expect.

.

My memory is probably faulty as to many auxiliary details but the basic incident did occur. But here we go: Poppy was chasing me, Armondless, in what would be our final bullying “Battle Royale”, kinda. Realize that I knew that he knew that I knew that Armond was just a school day away. We may have ran a few blocks, although plump pasty Polish boy couldn’t “run” too fast, or far. Then as we neared my house, Poppy began to slow down, and gaze agape. All my sisters were in the front yard. Yet he seemed to be focused on Laura, a couple years older than us, and her long, nearly white, blonde hair.

.

After that moment, Poppy was like my best friend. Well, not my best friend. Anyway, I must apologize to all Black women who harbor a dislike of blonde White women; basically, it may be my fault many more Black men started taking up with White women after the 1960s. Possibly I could have led Poppy away, but no, my selfish fate steered him right there, where I prostrated myself in relief that I was able to save my own ass. Unfortunately for Poppy, he and my sister never became a thing. Yet, it likely forever bent the feng-shui, karma chameleon, or the universal joint, towards intermixing, and loving. Coincidentally, my parents crossed the 1950s Catholic intermixing and love line, with their Polish and Irish papist commingling.

.

That said, my sister Laura, supported all women, especially those who stood up to, and fought, the system. She was a great intervener, a super mom, and a forthright and strong school teacher who went out of her way to help every student she could. Laura was called away forever in 2016 at age 55. Please donate to Breast Cancer research.

.

Finally, the dynamic I wanted to explain via comparison, may initially seem off-putting to some, and may be sadly welcomed by others. However, it will quickly revert, and make sense in an opposite way to both sides. Here I go with the juxtaposition microcosm allegory: Think of Armond as all encompassing systemic racism. And Poppy as the racist telling lies, fomenting hate, yelling slurs, and burning crosses. Armond’s height and muscle girth compared to the two gnomes (Harrison and I) he confronted, made the limited capacity of our freedom and liberty fully understood. Armond was the states’ rights of our entrapment, and the racist housing covenant controlling our movement. On the other hand, Poppy made sure we knew our place, and what exactly we were doing wrong. He could not spread hate effectively without Armond. I surmised years later that without Armond, Poppy could not have been a bully.

.

Armond likely would never have been associated with a bullying person, if it wasn’t for systemic racism. If we all four would have grown up organically without racism influencing so many parts of our lives, and in the same neighborhood, Poppy and I, with our hyperactivity, likely would have burnt the town down (I had budding pyromaniac tendencies). Harrison and Armond would have shook their heads at us, and went back to studying. But there Armond stood, analogous to the entire infrastructure of systemic racism.

.

He was a powerful societal fortress that only with immeasurable strength and collective action could Armond be thwarted or moved aside. In my upside down analogy, Harrison and I were like Black Americans trying to overcome all the stumbling blocks of racism on our own. Poppy’s bullying, analogous to racism’s outer demeanor, had no real strength without the support of Armond, who is analogous to White society, as in its larger population, and more so with its entrenched, political, and financial, power. Fomenting hate and carrying traitorous flags is utterly harmless and more than pathetic without the ability to suppress the vote, mass incarcerate, etc. With the dismantling of systemic racism, such displays and words would be doggedly diminished.

.

He also was the gentle giant. As far as I remember, Armond stood harmlessly and silently as he emitted a very visible, massive, force-field for Poppy, while Poppy did his verbal and psychological bullying. Without Poppy around, prodding his dutiful friend along, Armond would have faded into his true character, a supportive, caring person. While someone can be a good person around his or her family, and be a racist legislator at the same time, a White or Black person cannot create a racist system without enough others to push it consistently along. White privileged Americans have that kind of power.

.

Basically, there is no Armond without Poppy, and no Poppy, as wildly successful bully, without Armond, the powerful bulwark. If there are not a million mobilized, two-faced good, as well as always bad, White supremacists (Poppys), systemic racism collapses (Armond disappears as a bully’s helper). A strong silent racism structure standing over and protecting the White supremacy, moral and-or intellectual weakling, allowing it to do its damage. In a life without systemic racism, Poppy is my friend, and Armond is Harrison’s friend. These two Black students were the bullies they were in this circumstance because White society forced it on them due to FHA housing segregation, and-or from other fully documented racist-based deprivations.

.

Like students who confront a school administration’s lackadaisical, and happy-crap ignoring strategy towards student bullies, and-or teacher bullies, will never overcome their bully problem, Black Americans will never achieve their potential, on average and as consistently as White Americans have, if systemic racism is not actually dismantled. The fact that White supremacists have the platform they have today, shows that systemic racism is still strong enough to support them and damage the lives of Black Americans.

.

Conclusion.

There must be a way to more completely tamp down, or thwart, bullying activities of all kinds. It will likely consist of inculcating a greater responsibility, or impetus to intervene. How can you rock the boat, and effectively make changes when a good portion of White Americans see no need for changes? Not only do we deny being responsible for what our ancestors did, we cannot see through our viewpoint, which is encrusted with racist myths. This is the catch-22 of the go-along-to-get-along crowd, which is as many as 99.9% of White Americans, depending on the day, place, or situation.

.

White Americans have been the majority, and dominant power by far, until a few decades ago, and removing the structural, racist encrustment that Whites are responsible for will take too much time unless our insidious procrastination tactics are abolished. Therefore, the change required must also be initiated by White interveners. Expecting Black Americans to overcome such a thickly protected system of injustice en masse is as likely as, expecting a doughy little lump of a kid to climb a rope with his bare hands, if you just aggressively embarrass him enough. Or for two muscleless gnomes to fight back against a little bully with an immovable mountain friend. Those are the cruel ideas only bully sociopaths come up with. It is not survival of the fittest; it is allowing sociopath bullies, and their sycophants, free rein in too many areas of society. And remember, most everyone of us, at one time or another, have at least been a go-along-to-get-along, unawareness, or willfully ignorant, bully’s sycophant.

.

Our tendency to walk by, or stay on the sidelines during extreme events that we have normalized and compartmentalized as none of our business, except for saving specific others noted above, is also inherent in the human condition. That is why we can no longer rely on the myth that policing our White selves works. We must recognize our consistent failures in these areas, and that our structures must be revised to override our indifferent responses, or total unresponsiveness, to bullying in all its forms. Exceptionalism is too often a whitewashing of these failures to remove our shame and guilt. Many White Americans say they are Christians, or that we are a Judeo-Christian nation, but as far as I know, neither religion promotes hubris over humility.

Repenting for our sins of omission should be our first mission. What Whites do not do, as to discrimination, is much more likely to cause systemic problems. Truly helping the bullied person in our midst requires us to be fully accountable; complaining and spreading half-baked rumors about someone we know very little about is a lot easier. Which took less effort and required no rocking the boat of the status quo, watching the lynching of a person you had been taught to believe was inferior, or confronting the mob, and then if possible, stopping the lynching?

.

I told you about my father, also a Richard. He, and my mom, an Irish, O’Connell, Kentucky hillbilly, were extraordinary interveners. My mom, the first boy of ten siblings, who professionally planted tobacco at the age of ten in the 1930s, protected her five younger brothers from every bully, fearlessly jumping in to fight them on the road home after school. Only about 100 pounds, and five feet tall, she would never back down, once punching a bus driver in the stomach, after he refused to recant his accusation that she broke a school bus window.

.

RJC did not like to back down from bullies either. In the audio below, dad explains an event that occurred in 1943, when he was in Navy boot camp, at only 17. There was a confrontation generated by antisemitism. Note that the strategy he had implemented prior to the event would provide for a successful resolution, even though bullying prevention was not the reason he implemented it.

In reality, not everyone will be the interveners my parents were. I am likely not as high as the middle of the pack intervener when it comes to my four sisters, and me. Yet, it was our parents who instilled much of the intervener we had in us. RJC shows with his strategy that it is not simply the strongest who survive, but those with the kindest, strategic intelligence. If there were just three interveners at the level of my mom and dad for every one now, and nine for every one partial intervener similar to my sisters and I, think of the major transformation, even if only that minor increase in intervention occurred!

.

Realize that their cannot be more full-on sociopaths, and functional sociopaths would be reduced with the additional White interveners doing their intervening. The outcast constituency of functional sociopaths would shrink because outcasts would be more often protected. That means increasing interveners is a force multiplier. By adding in structural buffers and watchdog elements to constrain bullying, we would increase the consistency of human intervening, since individual interveners are not available 24-7 as sentinels in every street, school, classroom, legislature, migrant detention center, bathroom, courtroom, gym class, playground, presidential cabinet, prison, home, or workplace in the nation.

.

There are many people and organizations already working on these structural reforms, and much has already been figured out; it is consistency of implementation and funds to get it done that still hinder such reforms. Rather than attempt to list them all here, my objective was to show why bullying of every kind is so deeply systemic, and how it is up to us to correct what was faultily laid before our time. That we perpetuate these problems by ignoring, and avoiding them, and deciding that we are not complicit in the faults of our ancestors, and founders. We must accept the whole responsibility, or we cannot expect Americans, who still have serious problems with our social and economic structures, to stop protesting, and pointing out those problems.

.

Those who continue in denial will need to move aside because the interveners must soon grow in number, and influence. These interveners can end the forgetting of history’s abuses, and stop the selfish, unintelligent unkindness from undermining the lives of millions who do deserve better.

.

White Americans, we are especially culpable. The White Americans who deny this responsibility for our past, current, and any future harmful contrivances, must no longer bully us into delaying the structural changes required to remove the causal fault lines. These problematical constructions regularly, grievously, and mostly inflict their damage on certain groups: i.e. poor Americans of all kinds, LGBTQ, cisgender women as well as Black, Indigenous, and other Americans of color. An actual exceptional America is much better than that.

.

One of the main obstacles to our transformation is the canonization of good people, and good intentions. These concepts are flawed to the core. If there were some good White people with good intentions before, there are no, nil, nada, none, zip, zilch, zero now, and will never be any, anymore. Because Good White people have gotten away with too many horrors to continue this fabrication. Good intentions are too often undermined by these same good White people. From here on out, there are only good actions that produce the results all Americans should expect, and there are good systems that actually work much better for everyone. While perfection is not the goal, truthful, thorough, consistent, reassessment, and regular, relevant improvements are required. That means required.

.

If we are merely good people with good intentions, we will continue failing at societal cohesion, stability, and advancement. Unless we learn from both our sordid past, and superior history, we will never determine methods to escape from its tyranny, and build a better future. Self policing is a good people–good intentions fantasy. Bullies and bully systems pulverize potential, and abscond with bootstraps in such an environment. Americans are not only people, they are people in a system. We have always been a system, slowly, begrudgingly, painfully, and fitfully detaching from its White male dominance, from slavery to the industrial revolution through today. Until we are a true, We The People system, our current societal structure will continue to dampen or destroy the value a great majority of Americans are able to provide if given a real chance, especially those currently deemed irredeemable.

.

With a system built on a whitewashed White male supremacy (bully) platform, those who are marked as irredeemable, cannot rely on the good people to be fair, or protect them. There is no private charity, or private entity that will, or can, overcome these obstacles. Only a full scraping out of the rot and rule of the current White male power structure, and a reinvention of the power dynamics can accomplish what is necessary.

.

The best way to achieve effective long-term change is with a greater number of social interveners, while simultaneously developing a new system from a clean slate without the yesteryear societal façade, and racist houses of whitewashed mirrors. That work includes disrupting and dismantling the false, and self-serving, good-people-will-do-it-right narrative, and the corrupted structures such a misleading system created.

In the first paragraph of this essay I wrote this statement, which I consider racist; If anything is systemically wrong, it is the Black culture. The problem of which I have spent over 12,000 words explaining comes down to, sans the common problems every human experiences, why are Black Americans doing worse on average in a whole host of areas from incarceration rates to household wealth? The difficulty in blaming it on a minority group, and the dominant group constantly getting off scott-free, makes no logical sense.

White culture has never evened the playing field for the Black culture in any general way, only advancing in an on-again, and off-again manner, and reluctantly doing as little as possible, and continually pressing down in multiple ways, whether in via an uneven legal system, or in societal domination, which provides only for a sliver of a percent more to advantage themselves. Once that sliver makes it, they naturally peel off into higher income conclaves where their success can access more of the sequestered White privileges.

Every Black American left behind is further damaged since that community is never re-invested in, further imploding. Like any rational Black or White person, these oppressed (mass incarceration, etc.) and depressed (jobless, etc.) areas are not seen as viable, and so generally, if you are one of the few, you leave. Whereas mostly White areas around the country, lower and higher income coexist in a greater percentage, go to similar good schools, frequent similar businesses, etc. Therefore these areas are generally White-privilege-self-perpetuating. On the other hand, communities where Black Americans are concentrated, it is generally a disintegrating, downward spiral.

Real Black American culture is like real Polish American or Irish American culture. The Black culture White Americans denigrate was, and is, created, permeated, and saturated by the culture of White bullying and ongoing, insidious injustice.

.

Overcoming the effects of bullying must never again be considered a one-on-one interaction. Bullies are not defeated by violence anymore than drone killing many terrorists defeats them. Systems generate and allow bullying and terrorism. Maybe I could have defeated just the one key school bully in each city I lived in, to gain my freedom from anxiety and fear, but imagining that every bullied person can, or that other bullies do not rise up like zombies in a dystopian movie, is wholly unlikely, when the bullies and society determines who irredeemables are, and why we are them.

.

Bully and terrorist systems are fostered by governing and administrative systems that do not account for them, or understand that their ineffective systems are also a major part of the problem. The naïveté of institutions and-or their reluctance to find fault in themselves is the bane of existence for those who are oppressed by the school bully system, terrorist systems, and a White male hubristic system. Like expecting Black female employees to survive their sexual harassing racist and-or sexist employers; when we ignore those with the least power, they are atrociously subsumed by the perverted common sense clutches of the dominant White male American system.

.

Terrorism is terrible, but the responsible parties should not act to make the terrorism perpetual, instead the better system is able to destroy its supporting underbelly, which is its power to perpetuate. Using fire to fight fire perpetuates more fire. My father upended the anti-semtic terrorists by undermining their ability to function effectively, and infect others with violent intentions. The evolutionary forces behind male aggression are not invincible. It can be much better managed, instead we have allowed it to metastasize, even in a supposedly more advanced society. Like righteous terrorism against Allahu Akbar terrorism continues as more terrorism, White males having the most power times 100 breeds hubris, folly, and stagnation. Rinse, and repeat; add nausea, ad nauseam.
